Religious Education

The Bishops of Western Australia are responsible for Religious Education in Catholic schools. They approve what is taught and how it is taught.

Religious Education is part of the school curriculum for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. It is different from, but supports, faith formation. All students in Catholic Education in Western Australia are required to learn Religious Education.

The Religious Education Curriculum is based on the Western Australian curriculum set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Like other subjects, it outlines what students should know, understand, and be able to do. It also includes values and attitudes and provides guidelines for the assessment of student achievement.

The curriculum draws on Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church as principal sources for the content of teaching and learning of Religious Education. The Directory for Catechesis guides the processes that are appropriate for effective teaching and learning in Religious Education.
