Literacy & Numeracy
Literacy
Literacy is a core focus at Warlawurru, forming the foundation for all areas of learning. From Pre-Primary to Year 6, students build skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening through a structured and engaging literacy program. We use a range of approaches, including phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension, tailored to meet the needs of every student.
For students who are learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D), we incorporate the EAL/D Progress Maps to support their language development. These tools help us track progress, plan targeted support, and ensure every student is growing in confidence and competence as effective communicators. Through rich texts, purposeful writing tasks, and meaningful conversations, students are encouraged to develop a love of language and learning.
Numeracy
Numeracy at Warlawurru is guided by the Western Australian Curriculum and supports students in developing essential mathematical understanding and skills from Pre-Primary to Year 6. The program covers key areas such as number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.
Learning is hands-on, meaningful, and linked to real-life contexts, helping students see how mathematics is used in everyday situations. Through the use of concrete materials, digital tools, and open-ended tasks, students are encouraged to explore, question, and solve problems. We differentiate learning to meet individual needs, fostering confidence, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
